Travelling with children can be quite a challenge for parents. You constantly have to keep an eye on them, tell them what they should and shouldn’t be doing, watch out for their safety and comfort and most important of all, keep them entertained through the journey. Children will be children and they will always be bursting with energy and wanting to do fun things all the time. And the moment you, as a parent, start to feel that you’ve become adept at handling them, they will ambush you with something that you never saw coming!

We say, let kids be kids and let them do their best at springing surprises at you. Who says that these surprises always have to be unpleasant ones? With a little planning and preparation, there is nothing that parents cannot handle. Modern day kids amaze their parents with their independent opinions and thoughts on almost everything they are exposed to. So how about teaming up with them to create their very own travelling kits? The idea is to involve them in the various aspects of travelling so that they value its nuances, and learn about being responsible instead of being difficult about it.

In this post, we will be letting you in on some basic ideas on how you can get your kids to participate in putting together the whole paraphernalia that would eventually become their very own travelling kit. Read on know more.

The Right Travel Kit

Thats correct, bags for children are different from those for adults. If you go to the luggage store, you will see cute little luggage bags for children with strollers attached so that kids can drag them around on their own. If your kids are sporty, they could also opt for a small backpack or rucksack. Remember, this bag is meant just for tickling your childrens imagination and teaching them about responsibility and independence. So keep it light and do not try to pack too many items into it.

Alternatively, you can make a travel kit for your children at home. Theyre pretty easy to make and can be put together using common household items. This makes sense as you can customize the kits features to your children’s specific needs, tastes and personality. DIY kits/bags are also more affordable than readymade ones. Here are a couple of examples of easy DIY travel kits for children –

Making a travel kit for kids using an old pair of denim shorts

You will need “

  • An old pair of denim shorts
  • Long and strong lace/ribbons
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread
  • Fabric paint and paint brush

Making the kit “

  • Simply cut the shorts to a desired size lengthwise. No need to cut them if theyre already the size that you want them to be.
  •  Stitch up the hem of the shorts, thereby creating two sections to store your stuff. Stitch up the zip in front of the shorts (if any) as well. Your old shorts are now a bag.
  •  Let the waist button remain as it is, as it can be sued to close the kit shut.
  •  To be able to carry this kit over your shoulder, attach the laces/ribbons on both the sides of the kit as handles. The pockets on the shorts can be used as sections to store/carry different items.
  •  Put your kids in charge of decorating the kit with fabric paint, laces and ribbons. They could also stick sequins and other embellishments on it. And voil , the travel kit is ready for use!

Making a travel pouch for kids using an old cushion cover

You will need “

  • A cushion cover (small sized)
  • Needle and thread
  • Laces, fabric paint, glitter and ribbon bows for decoration
  • Glue

Making the pouch –

  • Decorate the cover by stitching lace on all sides.
  • To create more sections you could stitch a couple of pieces of fabric outside on the cover.
  • Ask your kids to use paint and glitter to decorate it further.
  • Stick ribbon bows on to the cover to add a feminine touch for a little girls pouch.
  • Use the cushion covers zip to open and shut the pouch. And the pouch is ready to be used!

Carry-on Contents for the Journey

Make sure that your childrens kit has enough sections to be able to carry a few games as per their interest that they can play along the journey. Besides these, they can also take along their story books, colouring books and crayons, notepad and stickers, and toys. There also needs to be enough space which can be allotted to dry snack items like granola bars, cookies, fruity chews, etc. to prevent leakages in their tiny bags.

The Packing Methodology

Take this opportunity to teach your kids the fine art of organising. Teach them how to pack their things without damaging them by placing the heaviest item of all at the bottom. Delicate items, if any, need to put into the bag at the end to prevent them from getting crushed under the heavy things.

Safety First

Teach your kids the importance of hygiene and safety by allotting a small section of the kit to their toiletries and common medicines. Besides a section for bathing soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, there needs to be pockets for keeping medicinal creams/gels, band aids, antiseptic lotions and so on.

Travelling-with-kids

Kids like to feel independent and want to do as many things as possible on their own. A DIY travelling kit may be seemingly unimportant but such simple things go a long way in shaping their behaviour and personality. Besides that, this DIY project is a great way for you and your children to bond by spending some quality time together and working towards a common goal.

Is colour important?

Articles/ Featured

There is a lot of discussion about the importance of colour when decorating a house, but can it actually affect our moods? There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that colour can result in many negative and positive impacts in our lives at many levels.

Even though the emotions evoked by different colours are subjective, the red spectrum is known to be warm, but can induce anger. This spectrum also includes orange and yellow, the colours of sunsets and happiness. Blues, purples and greens are included in the blue spectrum and can often evoke feelings of calm, but can also cause sadness and indifference. And we all have differing opinions on the colours that make us feel good and the colours that we find unsettling, but it probably isnt something we spend too much time contemplating!

Colour therapy is an accepted “ albeit highly alternative – treatment for stress and illness in many cultures. Colour therapists state that red stimulates the body and mind and is good for circulation, that yellow stimulates nerves and purifies the body, orange heals the lungs and increases energy, blue treats pains and illness and indigo alleviates skin problems. If only it were that easy.

But as more research is conducted into the effect of colour on many areas of human reaction and interaction, colour has been implicated in reducing exam results (red) and reducing levels of crime (blue). Perhaps the colours we dress our children in will affect their moods too? Its worth taking notice of the colours our children are wearing when they become upset. You just never know!

Meet the Maker- Spot of yellow

Today we meet the lovely Jodi from Spot of Yellow ~

Tell us about your business:

Spot of Yellow specialises in unique screen printed greeting card business – Melbourne-based, Australian-owned. My designs are clear, bold and simple with an element of cuteness or playfulness. I have a huge range of designs, that l have hand drawn and turned into screens ready for hand screen printing. l mostly print greeting cards. I felt there was a gap l could fill in the quality hand made card sections in great shops. I have a bank of retailers that stock my cards. As l am one woman show l am able to cater for my clients needs and I really enjoy a new challenge and tailoring my designs for my clients. Sometimes I am asked to design cards exclusively for that retailer. I also print on tee shirt, singlets, babies clothing and canvases.

I am highly motivated and passionate about my craft. I am self-driven and am always striving for the best I can do. I like to spend time in my home studio in Melbourne and enjoy popping into my retailers to show new designs and restock their stands. I am a graphic designer by trade and have two children 3.5 years and 21 months. Who are happily busy all day long. I enjoy rearing my children while being able to work. I am always finding inspiration everywhere I go. I love creating new, fresh designs that suit peoples special occasions. Spot of Yellow offers a unique gift-giving solution for those looking for something that is both high in quality and artistic design. All cards are printed on high quality card stock and come sealed in their own cellophane packet, complete with matching envelope.

What inspired you to start your business?

Spot of Yellow was a goal of mine to design, print and sell my own cards. I started the business when my son was 4 months old. When l left full time work to care for my children, this was the perfect time in my life to have a go. I enjoy the designing part and find l can fit it in between the kids needs. Spot of Yellow can solve all your card-buying woes with my wonderful range of hand pulled greeting cards.

Is there an interesting anecdote behind your business name?

My favourite colour is yellow – over 100 shades of yellow. Its my inspiration of life. To try and stay happy, positive and creative. My mother tells the story that when l was a young child of 3. l use to take my pink dresses off and put on my yellow dresses. Yellow has been with me for a long time now!

What is the most satisfying part of what you do?

Drawing mixed with screen printing is the perfect balance of creativeness for me. Each card is hand made with love and care. I love to draw and always have. As a child l was always drawing and encouraged to paint – it was something l really loved to do. Now l find myself encouraging my own children to draw and paint. There is space set up in the studio for them to create while l am printing. Its a great atmosphere creating together. I love the whole design process of thinking up the design, sketching it up, cleaning it up on the computer, and redrawing the image with a special pen, burning a screen and then hand pulling every design. The suspense of peeling back the screen to see the finished print. My style is distinctive with a hand drawn style showing through in all designs.

Have you tried something in business that didn’t work as planned, or on the flip side “ worked out better than expected?

I always get surprised which design will work better over another one. So l have given up trying to guess what will be a best-seller and design from the heart. My designs echo my life at present having 2 small children my designs are mostly inspired for them. So l love the thought that someone is giving a card to someone they love and it can turn into a great keepsake, that holds fast to the moment that mattered to them. Hand made cards are something special as someone has made it with their own hands and no card is exactly the same as they are all individually screen printed.

What would be your best tip for someone thinking about selling their handcrafted goods?

Follow your dreams and have a bit of fun along the way. Enjoy learning as you go. Approaching new retailers can be scary but that makes your heart beat a bit faster! Try having the attitude of œl will just give it a go – l have nothing to lose. Enjoy building your business slowly.

What is your favourite item you make?

I love getting a big card order in and making up my own production line. To get it to the retailers shelf as fast as possible.

Any personal or business highlights in the last year:

It still surprises me how well the cards are going. I am still so thrilled to have some many truly loyal retailers that have been with me along my yellow journey. There are some new retailers joining this year as well. So exciting things are happening in my yellow land. Also creating new designs gives me a real buzz as well.
