Meet the Maker ~ Cheeky little fox

5 minutes with/ Featured/ Introducing/ Meet The Maker/ Review/ Shopping

Tell us about your business:

We create gorgeous, hand-crafted hair accessories and hair accessory display organisers that make the perfect present for any occasion, or just because!

Our range includes fully lined hair clips, fabric covered button hair ties and embellished headbands. We take great pride in sourcing quality materials and using these to create beautiful pieces for both every day wear and special occasions, such as weddings and christenings. As well as a readymade range, we can also work with you to create custom pieces to meet your specific requirements.

What inspired you to start your business?

I have always enjoyed ˜creating and love ˜pretty things, so I had a go at making some hair clips and really enjoyed the process of making them, got fantastic feedback and sold them all very quickly. Therefore I made some more, extended the product range and this evolved into Cheeky little fox!

Is there an interesting anecdote behind your business name?

Yes! This is what I would call my eldest son Ben when he was being cute and cheeky! People always comment on the name at markets and ask how it came about. It makes people smile.

What is the most satisfying part of what you do?

Receiving positive feedback from my clients and having return customers is the most satisfying part of what I do. I dont have a little girl of my own to create pretties for, so I have to rely on others liking my creations enough to purchase from me. I love nothing more than getting an email to say that their little girl loved the headband that they had purchased for her or receiving photographs of an item being worn.

Have you tried something in business that didnt work as planned, or on the flip side “ worked out better than expected?

I find that products go in cycles and sometimes one item will be more popular for a little while than others. The Owly hair clip display organisers are generally very popular when exhibiting at markets, while hair clips and headbands are more popular with online customers.

What would be your best tip for someone thinking about selling their handcrafted goods?

I think the most important thing is to have fun! For me, I have to enjoy what I am doing to put 100% into it, when I can no longer do that, it is time to reassess. I see my time working on Cheeky little fox as my ˜me time. This is how I relax.

What is your favourite item you make?

At the moment I am really enjoying creating beautifully embellished headbands. I have recently made a few for adults as well as children and babies. I love that I can choose gorgeous embellishments and put them together in different ways and have totally different outcomes. I love combining different textures and playing with ideas to create the perfect piece.

Any personal or business highlights in the last year:

Cheeky little fox will celebrate its first birthday in September, so the whole year has been a highlight!

I would say that travelling to markets has been the best part. I have met some lovely repeat clients, stallholders and market organisers along the way and have been really inspired to create new products after attending these and speaking with customers about what they like.

I have also found some wonderful support online as well by joining online business forums and networking with other business owners.

3 things about you that people might not know:

  • I have 2 adorable little boys, Benny 22 months and Archie 3 months old
  • I am a secondary school teacher by qualification “ currently on maternity leave
  • I love tennis and look forward to the Australian Open every year
