If I had a dollar for every time someone commented to me œ I wish I was as creative as you¦ I would have retired long ago to the south of France. The truth is I am probably no more creative that you or that other person over there, my secret is that Ive worked out what Im good at and embraced it.
I am good with colour, and textiles and textures and matching things together in not obvious ways. I am good at thinking about how a practical object can be made more aesthetically pleasing without overcomplicating its design. They are the things I am good at.
Ask me to write a short story or essay an I am likely to fall apart in sheer panic, and after procrastinating for ever and a day, Ill produce something barely engaging. Ask me to put some make up on and Ill end up looking like a clown with panda eyes, Im not good at that at all.
So before you get all down and beat yourself up about your lack of creativity, take a step back and think about where you use your creativity everyday in different ways. Can you create a meal out of nothing? Get someone to do what you really want, but make them think it was their idea all along?
Raise super fantastic kids? Or play a song by ear? Throw an incredible outfit together from op-shop finds? Or even make a dreary work day feel like fun?
These are all super creative skills that Id love to have¦we are all creative, just in different ways. May be its time you embraced your own special creativity!
